Need for Speed Unbound reviewed by Luke Reilly on Xbox Series X. Also available on PlayStation 5 and PC. "When the rubber hits the road it’s evident Need for Speed Unbound hasn’t strayed very far from the fundamentals of 2019’s Heat. This is a little surprising following the series’ shift back to Criterion – a studio that has traditionally had a very distinct style of its own – although it isn’t a bad thing considering Heat was a welcome splash of gas for a franchise that was close to running on fumes. Unbound should, however, turn heads thanks to its bold new animated characters and special effects. Despite the odd juxtaposition between its traditional graphics and the cartoon-inspired flourishes, they are strikingly well done and make for an instantly recognisable instalment of this 28-year-old series. However, while the car customisation tools are as expressive as ever, it does feel unlikely that older players will be able to connect with the single-player mode’s preening cast of entitled chuckleheads, and unfortunately the separate online mode is currently missing core features like cops."

Need for Speed Unbound delights with a vibrant new art style and some exciting arcade racing, but familiar issues are as frustrating as an inopportune oil slick. #GameSpot #NeedForSpeedUnbound #Review The first thing that jumps out when starting Need for Speed Unbound is its vibrant art style. At a time when most other racing games are striving for photorealism, EA's latest distinguishes itself from the rest of the grid by adopting a stylized mix between reality and comic books. While its cars land on the side of realism, the characters behind the wheel are cel-shaded and its open world falls somewhere in between the two aesthetics. Vivid graffiti-style flourishes also pop up when you activate nitrous or fly off a ramp, and drifting kicks up colorful tire smoke that looks hand-drawn, with all of these effects punctuating the action with a unique sense of style. There aren't any modern racing games that look quite like it, yet the rest of Unbound feels like a continuation of 2019's Need for Speed Heat. From the distinction between day and night races to the cat-and-mouse chase that occurs when you have to outrun the cops and make it to a safe house in order to bank your money. Unbound doesn't attempt to reinvent the wheel, but what's here maintains the series' recent quality, even if there are some wrong turns along the way.

Ranking this 2nd to Need for Speed Heat, as it took 4 steps forward, but also some steps back. I went into this game COMPLETELY BLIND. I didn’t watch any trailers, didn’t watch any reviews, and didn’t partake in the BETA. I literally didn’t even find out that a new NFS game was due for this year…until someone tweeted it to me in September. Having said that…I enjoyed this game and don’t let the rushed reviews from Non-Car Gamers dissuade you from buying it. I can’t blame those journalists too much, it is their job after all and they want to be the first to the punch. But the first take is never the most honest take. Most games have depth that needs to be accessed before it can be properly addressed and criticized. This depth can’t be found in the first week of play. TL:DR I wanted to fully enjoy the game, digest it, let it sink in and then make a video on it. So here’s why I think NFS Unbound…is the SECOND Best Modern Need for Speed Game. I actually don’t mind the story. Maybe it’s because I hardly drive my Corvette anymore, so I’m slowly aging backwards from 46 back to 26, my pre mid-life crisis me that existed. Seriously guys, I’m in my mid 20’s. I’m not actually in my 40s like some people think, that’s just a running joke about me owning a Vette. I’ve had people at car meets actually be surprised to see how young I am. Okay that aside, back to NFS Unbound. The story is told through short sweet cutscenes. Some are still cringy, but since they don’t overstay their welcome, I didn’t get bothered by those ones. It’s kind of wholesome when you leave the garage each time and Rydell asks you for advice on using modern technology OR gives you advice from what he learned from his era. A nice balanced dynamic of an old dad trying to connect with their surrogate daughter. Unbound has charm in it’s story. It’s not a great story by any means, but it’s not bad either. Not even close. You’re finally playing as a down to Earth Car Enthusiast. Not some Undercover Cop, Secret Heist participant, or Revenge Chaser looking to right wrongs. The main character you play is just a mechanic for a failing shop. They’re young, but not a total hype beast. They don’t care about followers, but still understand social media enough to explain to Rydell how it works, but not being so obsessed to the point, that they feel comfortable to livestream in public like Tess does. The Main Character feels like an Actual Car Enthusiast I can relate to and probably have even met variants of in Real Life. Like seriously, I love this presentation for once. I’m so sick of the whole, GET FOLLOWERS ON SOCIAL MEDIA. GET FOLLOWERS, POST VIDEOS, DO WILD STUNTS, ROB TRUCKS, GET FOLLOWERS, STEAL CARS, GET FOLLOWERS. That literally every Arcade racer is trying to be. The Crew 2, has Followers as a metric, Forza Horizon uses Fans, Need for Speed Heat gets REP or Reputation. All those are fancy words for just saying, “Get Famous” and it’s tragic when the past 10 years of Arcade Games have been peddling stories with that as the backbone of the game. This...this is the NFS the new generation of Car Enthusiasts will grow up with and Good Lord, am I so dearly fond of that. I'm so proud THIS, is what they'll grow up playing. Need for Speed Unbound is a curious game. After several years of bland, often bad games, Need for Speed Unbound feels like a breath of fresh air. While it’s far from the most perfect racing game out there, it’s definitely filling an important niche, and it’s doing so with a hefty amount of style. Need for Speed Unbound looks great, is a lot of fun to play, and most importantly, leaves me feeling quite good about the future of the Need for Speed franchise as a whole.

It is the twenty-fifth instalment in the Need for Speed series, the first for Criterion since 2013's Rivals with Ghost Games and the first as a main developer since 2012's Most Wanted. Unbound was revealed by EA on October 6, 2022, and developed by Criterion. The game features an art style that merges artistic elements like cel-shading and graffiti art with the more realistic art style of other Need for Speed games. The map is based in a fictional city inspired by Chicago called Lakeshore City.[3] This game is set to be released on December 2, 2022, for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Need for Speed Unbound is a racing game set in a fictional city called Lakeshore City, which is based on Chicago. Like previous entries in the series it will feature an open world environment, and will feature gameplay similar to that of previous entries in the series, being mainly focused around street racing.[5][6] The "heat system" from Need for Speed Heat returns in Unbound, where the player attempts to gain notoriety among the police.[3] Additionally, similar to previous entries, the game will feature various forms of customization such as installing various body kits, adding a splitter, or even completely removing the front or rear bumpers.
