This 475-kilometre long route at the northernmost tip of the Indian subcontinent connects the cities of Manali and Leh at the heart of the Ladakh region. The term “highway” applies quite literally, since the route traverses five of the highest drivable mountain passes in the world – among these the Lohtang La at 3,978 metres above sea level, the Lachulung La at 5,059 metres and the Tanglang La at 5,325 metres. After having stocked up in La Paz, the highest capital city in the world, MARIA, the grocer, returns to her village. It’s situated in the high mountains of the Yungas forest. Maria is one of the rare women in Bolivia who dare take on these trails that are lost in the clouds. The grocer is an ace at the wheel and as brave as they come, well worthy of the wages of fear, in risking the trip along the dizzy heights of the ravines. But once she gets up there, her journey is not over. She runs further risks by taking her mobile store up to a remote village. Maria doesn’t do this for the money, but to bring assistance to the residents, who walk for an hour through the mountains for a few errands. LOURDES ventures along one of the most notorious of the “Roads of Death”, in order to bring help to the women who dig for gold. She tries to persuade them to give up this trade, which will never make them rich and which, more importantly is killing them by slow degrees… whole families work in waters that are highly polluted with mercury. The road leading to the mines is a way of the cross, with broken-down trucks and landslides regularly cutting off the route. Rain falls incessantly, the weakened mountain sides collapse, carrying houses and roads in their passage. It’s clear that Bolivia, because of global warming, is suffering from extreme climatic phenomena. Guoliang Tunnel Road, located in the Taihang Mountains of China's Henan Province, is a remarkable and breathtaking feat of human engineering. There is a world-famous "cliff village" in Liangshan, Sichuan Province, China, formerly known as Atuleer Village, with 72 families living here. The village as a whole is located in a mountain pass at an altitude of 1,400 to 1,600 meters. The villagers walk to the outside, outside the village need to climb the cliff drop of nearly 800 meters over the 13 steps of 218 steps of rattan escalator. Nowhere do people drive as brutally and recklessly as here. In Bangladesh you drive on the road like others drive with a bumper car: if you need space, you simply ram the car driving next to you. The police only came if there are fatalities. The biggest bottleneck in the transport system is the historical old town of Dhaka. Old Dhaka is a universe of its own, a world of bazaars in which every trade has its own quarter: there are streets of jewelers, sweets makers and fashionable tailors, and the vegetable wholesalers have their warehouses down at the port. The deliveries take place mostly on the river, the Buriganga River, a stinking cesspool. But the sold goods usually leave by land, and the customers also come by the land route – the Nawabpur Road. They generally come in buses or by rickshaw, where too many people are crammed into too little space. The traffic in Dhaka is everyday, normal madness. This is the most dangerous moment in transport. Before they can use canoes, carriers must pass the rapids with rafts. The logs are then sent to China. In Madagascar, poverty drives thousands of peasants to the south of the island, "Ilakaka", the largest deposit of sapphires in the world. For ten years, this Malagasy "Eldorado" has attracted students, the unemployed, taxi drivers, a whole population of underprivileged people who come to seek their fortune. As far as the eye can see, the ocher earth has been dug by hand , a multitude of manholes approximately 1 meter in diameter. Ilakaka, anyone can try their luck, all it takes is a shovel, a pickaxe and a lot of luck. To find precious stones, a miner goes blind down the well, digs, fills buckets that another man brings to the surface by a rope. All that remains is to pass this land through a sieve to hope to find the precious stone. It’s simple, but dangerous. Problems arise as soon as the shafts are a dozen meters deep and the miners decide to dig the galleries horizontally, without shoring.
