Wearing sunscreen is important for a variety of reasons ‼️ The primary reason is to protect your skin from the harmful effects of the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays, which can cause sunburn, premature ageing, and even skin cancer. When you’re out in the sun, your skin is exposed to two types of UV rays: UVA and UVB. UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin and can cause premature ageing, while UVB rays primarily affect the surface of the skin and can cause sunburn. Both types of UV rays can contribute to the development of skin cancer over time. To protect your skin from these harmful effects, it’s important to wear sunscreen every day, even on cloudy days. Sunscreen with a high SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of 30 or higher can help block both UVA and UVB rays. UV radiation is a known cause of skin cancers such as Melanoma, Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Basal Cell Carcinoma. UVB penetrates the epidermis and causes sunburns while also increasing the risk of skin cancer. In response to UV damage, cells called melanocytes release a pigment called melanin that provides some protection from sunlight. UVA can also increase skin cancer risk, but is mostly involved in accelerating skin ageing. UVA damages the elasticity of the skin, making it more prone to wrinkling and sagging.
