Cambridge University's Under the Microscope is a collection of videos that show glimpses of the natural and man-made world in stunning close-up. Check out the rest of the series here: 🤍 In this video we see a killer T cell of the immune system attacking a cancer cell. Professor Gillian Griffiths: "Cells of the immune system protect the body against pathogens. If cells in our bodies are infected by viruses, or become cancerous, then killer cells of the immune system identify and destroy the affected cells. Cytotoxic T cells are very precise and efficient killers. They are able to destroy infected or cancerous cells, without destroying healthy cells surrounding them. The Wellcome Trust funded laboratory of Professor Gillian Griffiths, at the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research, investigates just how this is accomplished. By understanding how this works, we can develop ways to control killer cells. This will allow us to find ways to improve cancer therapies, and ameliorate autoimmune diseases caused when killer cells run amok and attack healthy cells in our bodies." Cytotoxic T cells are just 10 microns in length: approximately one-tenth the width of a human hair. These movies are 92 times real time. The original footage shown was made by Alex Ritter, a PhD student on the NIH-OxCam programme, in the laboratory of Professor Gillian Griffiths at the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research and the Department of Medicine of the Clinical School of the University of Cambridge. The images were acquired using an Andor Revolution spinning disk system with an Olympus microscope. Professor Griffiths is a Wellcome Trust Principal Research Fellow. Learn how to prevent cancer with Ozempic by understanding insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome. Insulin resistance occurs when cells in your body, especially in your muscles, fat, brain, and liver, do not respond well to insulin, causing disruption to your body's homeostasis. This can lead to chronic non-communicable diseases, including metabolic syndrome, which is diagnosed when you meet three out of five criteria, all of which result from increased insulin resistance. By knowing your level of insulin resistance using the HOMA-IR score, you can better understand your risk of heart attack, stroke, dementia, fatty liver disease, cancer, depression, and other diseases. Discover the link between obesity and insulin resistance, and how MHO (metabolically healthy obesity) can still increase your cancer risk. Learn how excess body weight, low vegetable and fiber intake, excess refined carbohydrates and sugar, and lack of exercise can also increase your cancer risk, and why obesity is now the second most common preventable cause of cancer. CANCER HAS WON IT'S GAME OVER It is with a sad and heavy heart that I say this, my recent surgery showed each site was cancerous with no margins. Stains showed mass deposits all over my left side and back, with deep deposits towards internal organs. Time frame is irrelevant now, I do not want to tell anyone what is expected to happen now, until I am ready. I should explain for people I was told to enjoy the next two weeks as after that they expect me to be to sick to enjoy life. I am still going to have my samples tested in the hope we can save a life in the future, I will do everything in my power to make that a reality! We will all continue the research! My family and I knew this day would come, but it has come faster than any one expected, my team are fighting for me to try everything possible, but my body is failing fast, I can feel it and we all know it. No one should have to go through this mental and physical pain in this day and age. I will now be documenting the end of my life, my fight, my struggle in the hope that I can make people smile, laugh and spread some joy around the world. In the less than 0.01% chance I manage to beat this, I will spend the rest of my life helping others in horrific situations, cancer is just one awful thing that affects people! I will leave you with this, smile, laugh and see the beauty in everything everyday, make the most of being able to be you, but most of all never regret anything! Make every day count, because like me you may wake up unable to continue to do what you love. My dreams are just that now, dreams, white clouds in the sky that I will never reach. Much love and I'm sorry it's not better news. #dontgiveindontgiveup Don't Give In! Don't Give Up! The next step is to get my DNA Sequenced, so as specialist medical researchers can see if we can find the needle in the haystack to treat this. Not everyone can get the same type of treatment, not everyone is able to have chemo, radiotherapy, immunotherapy and the likes. I am one of those with a rare form of cancer that can't be treated by conventional means. There is litterally no research into this type so it's important to me, to document everything and record it all, so that if something can be done and someone spots it, we have that added bonus! 🤍 - Need Proof? The most common symptom of breast cancer is a new lump or mass (although most breast lumps are not cancer). A painless, hard mass that has irregular edges is more likely to be cancer, but breast cancers can be also soft, round, tender, or even painful. Other possible symptoms of breast cancer include: Swelling of all or part of a breast (even if no lump is felt) Skin dimpling (sometimes looking like an orange peel) Breast or nipple pain Nipple retraction (turning inward) Nipple or breast skin that is red, dry, flaking, or thickened Nipple discharge (other than breast milk) Swollen lymph nodes under the arm or near the collar bone (Sometimes this can be a sign of breast cancer spread even before the original tumor in the breast is large enough to be felt.) Many of these symptoms can also be caused by benign (non-cancerous) breast conditions. Still, it’s important to have any new breast mass, lump, or other change checked by an experienced health care professional so the cause can be found and treated, if needed. Checking your breasts is as easy as TLC: Touch your breasts: can you feel anything new or unusual? Look for changes: does anything look different to you? Check any new or unusual changes with a GP Like, Share and Comment. Cervical Cancer Signs & Symptoms (& Why They Occur) Cervical Cancer (cancer of the cervix) is the 3rd or 4th most common gynecological cancer worldwide with an estimated age of onset of 52 years old. Cervical Cancer is caused by human papillomavirus virus (HPV) infections, with particular types of HPV being more problematic than other types. Cervical Cancer is often discovered in the early stages of disease by screening and diagnostic methods (pap smear and colposcopy), so in some cases patients may be asymptomatic. However, as the disease progresses, more signs and symptoms of Cervical Cancer become apparent, including abnormal vaginal bleeding and other findings related to metastasis of the cancer. In this lesson, we discuss the signs and symptoms of Cervical Cancer, including why those signs and symptoms occur. I hope you find this lesson helpful. Download your free eBook: The Researcher's Guide to the Hallmarks of Cancer eBook at 🤍 Hanahan and Weinberg changed the research world with the publication of The Hallmarks of Cancer. These scientists sought to organize the complexity of cancer biology by breaking it down to ten fundamental principles. Now you can understand cancer targets and pathways on a deeper level within the context of the Hallmarks. This new eBook from Cell Signaling Technology® will guide your understanding of the cellular signaling behind each of the ten Hallmarks of Cancer, including: - Resisting Cell Death - Deregulating Cellular Energetics - Epigenetic Plasticity - Sustaining Proliferative signaling - Inducing Angiogenesis - Evading Growth Suppressors - Avoiding Immune Destruction - Genomic Instability and Mutation - Activating Invasion and Metastasis - Tumor-promoting inflammation By matching the Hallmarks of Cancer with related signaling pathways and identifying key antibody targets, you can quickly and easily understand the biological processes involved in each of the Hallmarks.
